Hefei Temple
In Hefei Berlinwasser International is operating a WWTP with a capacity of 310,000 m3/day. The plant is treating wastewater produced by around 1 million people and serves as a model for privatisation in the infrastructural sector in China.

The WangXiaoYing treatment facility, which is structured as a private enterprise, has led to a noticeable improvement in the quality of surface waters in and around Hefei. Discharge values, examined regularly by the Environmental Agency of the City of Hefei, are well below the maximum allowable levels.

The treatment plant is the first project of this type in Hefei, and can serve as a model for privatisation in the infrastructural sector in China. Extensive cooperation with BWI’s Chinese partners ensured the success of the pilot project in the mega-city. The facility, the largest of its kind in the Anhui province, is a nitrogen removal, activated sludge plant with simultaneous biological phosphorus elimination and mechanical sludge treatment.

Environmental protection
Since its commissioning, the uninterrupted availability of the plant has ensured that no untreated wastewater has been released into the Feihe River at any time. Tobias Tu, the managing director appointed by BWI AG, and his team are ensuring stable operations and the continuous improvement of operations. To meet this responsibility, the operating consortium has invested RMB 12 million (€1.11 million) in the first year of operations alone.

Training and knowledge transfer
BWI AG has brought the extensive fund of knowledge it has gathered in its international projects to the private consortium and the cooperation to ensure that the plant operates without interruption and at a high environmental standard. The operating personnel, taken over from the original Hefei operation, is receiving extensive training in operations and modern management methods in Berlin and Hefei, which is continually improving their level of qualification.

The universities of the cities of Hefei and Göttingen are involved in the exchange of knowledge between German and Chinese experts. Berlinwasser International AG, Hefei Wangxiaoying Sewage Treatment Co. Ltd., HAWK and the University of Hefei are planning joint R&D projects in wastewater technology and training and consulting services. The objective is to develop techniques using cutting-edge technology and ensure the continual optimization of operations management.
