Asia

Berlinwasser’s launch on the Asian market came in 1997 with the construction and operation of the waterworks in Xi’an. Since then, China has been the most important base for developing our water and wastewater activities in the countries of the Asian Pacific Region.

Economic boom and water availability
As the world’s largest continent, Asia stretches over around
44.4 Mio. km2, a third of the planet’s land area. Two thirds of the world’s population live here, with access to one third of the world’s water reserves.

Most of large cities in Asia suffer under an inadequate water supply. With populations growing, prognoses suggest that water requirements will increase five-fold by 2045.

People and the environment are paying a high price for Asia’s economic boom in recent years: rivers, inshore waters and ground water have been heavily polluted. Water quality is at an alarmingly low level, posing serious risks for human health. As yet, only half of all households connected to a water supply are also connected to a sewage system.

Asia has been the victim of an increasing number of natural disasters. In the past 10 years, one-third of the world’s water-related disasters, in the form of flooding and droughts, have occurred in Asia.

Berlinwasser International supports the cooperation between Germany and Asia in the water and wastewater sector. Our projects in Asia are designed to ensure that the population’s basic water requirements are met and to create sustainable water supply and wastewater disposal systems.
