Belo Horizonte Downtown

In Brazil, active environmental protection does not stop at the outskirts of urban centres. Wastewater-related projects are being carried out there with momentum and dedication. Overall, the demand for water supply and wastewater related technology and know-how is very high in Latin America.

Minas Gerais
In the federal state of Minas Gerais, BWI AG is slaking a specific need for water-related expertise with well management systems. BWI has operated a branch office in Nova Lima, BW Brasil Ltda., since January of 2006. That office is in direct proximity to the metropolis of Belo Horizonte, which is Brazil’s third largest city, with a population of 4 million.

Spring-board for Latin America
Though based in Minas Gerais, BW Brasil Ltda. is responsible for the entire Latin American region. It does concentrate on Brazil though, which has the continent’s largest population (220 million) and its most dynamic economy.

Consulting Services
BW Brasil offers the BWI portfolio of services on the South American continent, with special emphasis on the following consulting and other services in the water and wastewater sectors:

  • Design of water supply and wastewater systems;
  • Operational optimization of water supply and wastewater systems;
  • Improving the energy efficiency of water suppliers;
  • Reducing water losses
  • Operations and management agreements

In addition to services in those areas, BW Brasil provides deep-well related services in Brazil. These services draw on the experience gained by the Berlin water utilities in preventative well maintenance and sustainable well management in Berlin.

Tenders and Clients
BWI also participates in tender proceedings in Latin America within the framework of projects financed by the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank or KfW.

Current clients include Brazilian water supply operations, industrial operations and mining enterprises.

Info box
Minas Gerais is the fourth largest Brazilian state, comparable to France in the size of its territory (588,384 km²). It is of key significance for water supply in Brazil: 70% of the water volume in the Sao Franzisco River (catchment area: 641,000 km²) originates here. The Sao Franzisco, one of the three largest rivers in Brazil, crosses the entire north-eastern section of the country before flowing into the Atlantic. Water from Minas Gerais flows to the mega-cities of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro via the rivers Rio Piracicaba (catchment area: 12,746 km²) and Rio Paraiba do Sul (catchment area: 57,000 km²).
